Effects of Thyroid on Fat Loss

The thyroid is the powerful control center of the body when it comes to metabolism and how easily we gain or lose weight. Your thyroid gland is in the front of your neck, right below the area known as the “Adams apple”. The function of the Thyroid is to take iodine mineral found in the diet and convert it to hyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). They make these two thyroid hormones as a result of combining iodine and the amino acid tyrosine. Under normal conditions the thyroid gland produces about 3/4 T4 and 1/4 T3. The potency of T3 is roughly 4 times as powerful as T4.

Thyroid levels are modulated by a feedback loop using Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) released by the pituitary gland in the brain. In other words if your thyroid hormone levels get to high, your brain will release TSH in order to bring it down. If your levels are too low, your Thyroid will make T3 and T4 until TSH is released in adequate amounts in order to slow it down.

Thyroid & Fat loss:

During long periods of dieting your T3 levels will dramatically decline. You do not want a slow metabolism because fat loss will come to a screeching halt. It is the reason why fat loss gets much harder the longer you are on a diet.

This is one reason why the “cheat meal” is so popular during dieting. By having a high calorie cheat meal you shock the body into wanting to raise it’s thyroid hormones and hence the bodies overall metabolism. As a result you should kick past a fat loss plateau and start losing fat again for a while. Of course there is only so many times you can do this and eventually your body will plateau no matter how many cheat meal cycles you do every few days.

Thyroid Supplements:

One way to get past an extreme long term fat loss plateau is to supplement with products that could help manipulate your thyroid levels.

Gugglesterones: Guggul is an extract found in resin of a tree found in India. It plays a role in increasing the conversion from T4 to T3 in the liver. It is thought that it may actually directly stimulate the thyroid due to its action of converting it from T4 to T3. T4 is the pre-cursor to the main potent thyroid form T3.

Ephedra Ephedra is a central nervous stimulant that also stimulates your beta-2 receptors on your fat cells. This stimulation directly causes an increase in cAMP. cAMP has been shown to increase thyroid function, insulin levels, and fat burning in cells. Another common fat burning supplement Synephrine also works similiar to ephedrine, due to similiarities in structure. Caffeine is stacked with ephedra or synhephrine, to make it a more potent fat burner. This is because caffeine blocks the breakdown of cAMP. Caffeine also increases fatty acid levels in the blood, allowing more fat in the blood to be burned for energy instead of glucose.

Cytomel: Synthetically manufactured liothyronine sodium resembling the natural thyroid hormone tricodide-thyronine (L-T3). Since it mimics the bodies T3 it will have the same effects as if more T-3 was released in the body. Release that Cytomel supplementation is very dangerous and has a host of short and long term side effects.

If you choose to do it, cycles should be very brief and only done occasionally, as to not upset the thyroid negative feedback loop. Some pro-bodybuilders have had to take thyroid supplementation the rest of their life as a result of long term Thyroid drug abuse.

Cytomel is sometimes used in conjunction with steroid use, as increased metabolism also plays a role in better utilization of Proteins. As a result of better protein synthesis, cytomel should in theory lead to better muscle gains while on a steroid cycle.

HGH (Human Growth Hormone) Effects

HGH (Human Growth Hormone) is a very powerful hormone to bodybuilders. Everyone seems to focus on the effects of testosterone, but it is not the whole story. Growth Hormone has a synergistic effect with testosterone and has it’s own intrinsic muscle building and fat loss properties. This may be why many pro-bodybuilders and athletes use it in combination with their steroid cycle regimen.

HGH Effects on Body:

Human Growth Hormone is produced from the pituitary gland in the brain. It is was causes our body to grow from a child size to an adult. Those with GH problems have to take GH injections as a kid in order to grow. On the flipside those suffering from “Giantism” (Very tall at a young age) have too much secretion of GH. Too much GH in the body can cause you to grow to abnormal size and proportions and cause harmful side effects.

HGH and Bodybuilding:

Bodybuilders take GH because they believe it will increase muscle, strength, and burn fat. Athletes use it because they know it will evade detection by steroid tests.

Does Growth Hormone work?

Bodybuilders spend thousands of dollars a month thinking Growth hormone works. Older individuals use it as a holy grail for the fountain of youth. I recently wrote a seperate in-depth article on these issues: Does Growth Hormone Work? that I encourage to you read.

Short Term Side Effects from HGH Abuse:

HGH abuse would be in the cases of bodybuilders taking supraphysiological does for cycles, like they do with steroids. Short term abuse side effects of HGH, likely appears to be more dramatic and serious than with testosterone.

Acromegaly is the name of a disease that is caused by too much HGH in the body. It is the overgrowth of the bones and connective tissue causing a portruding jaw and eyebrows. You will start to look like a “cro magnon” man. Your hands and feet become abnormally large and your internal organs grow, including your heart, which is irreversible. Liver and Thyroid damage and low insulin levels are also possible side effects of abuse. You may also possibly be putting yourself at risk of cancers and other health effects.

Long term health effects of growth hormone replacement therapy:

Despite the claims of the anti-aging bandwagon for growth hormone there is no real scientific evidence that growth hormone can improve your lifespan or health. In fact, some studies suggest that lifespan may be shortened due to higher natural levels of growth hormone in the body.

Many people are cautious of using it as a replacement therapy for older individuals because many doctors claim that HGH will cause cancer. The best evidence that we have against this notion is from the work of Dr. Chen and Dr. Terry. Chen and Terry who run a clinic where they perform HGH injections. From 1994 - 1996 they treated more than 800 patients with HGH injections. There have not been any reports of cancer from any of the patients.

Dr. Terry stated in Grow Young with HGH,

“With 800 people over the age of about 40, you would think that given normal incidence rate of cancer, some of these people would get cancer. It could be that there is some sort of protective effect from growth hormone replacement.”

Some studies have even showed no increased risk of cancer from growth hormone supplementation. However, there is many conflicting studies for growth hormone for it’s role in causing cancer and it’s effect on the cardiovascular system. Many studies are not even sure the exact roles of how GH interacts with IGF-1 or IGF-11 in forming cancer. In one study of HIV patients who were on growth hormone long term, the majority had higher pancreatic enzymes, carpal tunnel syndrome, and higher blood glucose levels.

The best answer at this time is science doesn’t really know for sure the long term health effects of growth hormone replacement therapy. There really isn’t enough research out there to find a definitive answer for all possible side effects and risks with growth hormone.

Alcohol and Bodybuilding

Alcohol is the most widely consumed socially acceptable drug. Unfortunately, that means for bodybuilders they may be caught in situations where they feel the need or are tempted to drink alcohol. This article will go through the physiological effects of alcohol so bodybuilders will see what a very negative effect alcohol can have for muscle gains and fat loss.

Alcohol and Muscle Gain Effects

Alcohol creates hangovers and lack of energy. With reduced energy and strength you won’t be able to work your muscles and therefore your workout will just go down the toilet. You almost
might as well not show up to the gym!

Alcohol lowers protein synthesis by a whopping 20%! It does so by blocking the actions of nutrients involved in muscle contraction. It also dehyrdrates cell’s and cell volumization is needed to increase protein synthesis. Alcohol lowers testosterone and increases estrogen.

Alcohol and Fat loss Effects

Fat burning stops altogether. The kreb cycle which normally involves burning fat will instead be burning the alcohol off to detoxify your body (since alcohol is seen as a poison the body!). So not only will you not be burning fat, but you’ll be drinking extra calories which are 7 calories per gram(almost as dense as fat), which leads you to put on more fat with all the extra calories you will be drinking.

Alcohol and steroids

Alcohol is tough on the liver. If you use steroids once in a while they are also fairly hard on the liver, even if injected. Therefore it’s in your best interest to never have a lifestyle with those in it(on or off cycle) so as to give your liver a break.

Other health effects

Alcohol lowers testosterone and increases estrogen. In males, this will reduce your confidence, sex drive, and mental health long term. Alcohol puts you at an incresed risk of cancer. And of course, you can become heavily addicted to alcohol leading to a life centered around a bottle instead of more positive things in life.

As you can see bodybuilding and alcohol work against each other and is one of the worst things you could do if you are a serious body builder. Having alcohol once in a while is not a big deal, but having it once a week or more I would think have a serious effect on you.

Steroids effects on Females

Steroids are not as accepted in the bodybuilding community as with male bodybuilders. And for good reason considering Testosterone is a “male hormone”. Just like when men want to go through a sex change they take estrogen, women take testosterone to become men. So as you can see it’s a very dangerous path for a woman to be taking testosterone.

Long term testosterone can turn a woman into a very masculine looking female. Long term women steroid users usually get around this, by doing very short cycles or in low doses so it doesn’t drastically change their body. Testosterone is extremely androgenic through it’s conversion to DHT which is really what causes all the sexual effects in men. Most women choose to try less androgenic steroids like deca so they can get more of the anabolic and fat loss effects without the equivalent harsh androgenic effects.

Effects on women:

Hair loss and hair growth patterns like men
Fat loss and muscle gain in male patterns
Increased acne
Increased aggression
Loss of period
Permanent Clitoral enlargement
Permanent Lowering of voice
Low HDL, High LDL
High cholesterol
Bone loss

With many of these effects permanent, a woman’s use of
anabolic steroids a very serious decision female bodybuilder’s
must make.

Smoking’s Effects on Bodybuilding Gains

The issue of smoking and its effect on muscle gains and fat loss is a long time debate in the bodybuilding community.

I’m going to come out and say that bodybuilding and smoking have very little to do with each other in effecting your muscle gains. I know that my fellow bodybuilders want to say it will effect it dramatically, but that is simply based on no direct studies.

You might say, well there is no facts that point to your case that it doesn’t effect it dramatically. The answer is simple. There are top pro-bodybuilders who smoke. No matter how genetically gifted you are or how many steroids you take, you can not get to the pro-level unless smoking had very little effect on your gains.

To me smoking is a health and motivation issue. The health effects you know so I won’t bore you with repeating them. It’s a motivational issue because it effects your breathing. If you are out of breath you are less likely to enjoy your workout or finish it. If your workouts aren’t fun or are too hard then you are more likely to quit working out or not work out as frequently.

And what good is bodybuilding if you smoke? People will look up to you for being ripped and/or massive, but if you smoke they will think you are throwing it all down the drain. And they are right.

Fat Loss With Help of Steroids

When losing fat in the mind of a bodybuilder, maintaining as much lean body mass (LBM) as possible while trying to drop to single digit body fat percent levels is the goal.

Unfortunately calorie restriction puts the the body in a catabolic state, which is the process in which your body breaks muscle at a accelerated rate for energy. To fix this problem many will use steroids. They don’t do it for a crutch, but because it allows them to acheive a level of BF% that they would not reach naturally no matter how strict the regimen.

Steroids will insure that the body is in an anabolic or near anabolic state at all times during their cutting phase. The mechanism of it works like this: steroids put you in a ultra-anabolic state making you less likely to store fat and break down muscle instead, during calorie restriction. Steroids change nutrient partitioning (so it actually changes your basic metabolism function by making your body “prefer” to eat up fat instead of muscle for calories). They do this nutrient their direct action of stimulating the AR receptors and by blocking the glucocortisoid, which helps block the action of the cortisol hormone. Steroids therefore are not just for building muscle, but also good during cutting because they preserve muscle and help block fat formation.

One idea that circulates in steroid circles is that certain steroids have magical cutting qualities to them such as Winstrol and Trenbolone. Winstrol and trenabolone makes the user not hold excessive water like testosterone and other steroids. They also makes the user look hard and dense, which is why many believe it has some magical fat burning properties. There is actually one major reason why they are good. In the case of Trenabolone it binds strongly to the AR and both winstrol and tren don’t convert to estrogen. This makes them both better at fat loss than testosterone. Some people stack testosterone with winstrol and trenabolone during cutting, but this counteracts the major benefit of using these steroids by themselves for burning fat because you are introducing high levels of estrogen.

Steroid Facts and Myths

Steroids are probably one of the most misunderstood drugs around, full of many misconceptions and exaggerations. Most have not tried it or even know anyone (at least to their knowledge) that has tried them. People fear more what they do not know or understand and the media and politicians, have taken advantage of that for their own gains.

Steroids are much more prevelant than people are aware. They think they will be able to “tell”, but unless you done steroids yourself, it is unlikely you will know for sure if someone else around you is doing it. Usually people who are around someone a lot, won’t notice rapid weight gains as someone who hasn’t seen you in weeks.

The media plays into this hype because they love manipulating the “ignorant masses” and sensationalizing things. Having some past experience with various steroid compounds and spent years studying them, I can help answer some some common questions.

1) Steroids will turn you into a raving lunatic A.K.A “Roid Rage”

This is mostly false. The longer the cycle and the type of drugs used, such as tren or high doses of testosterone, can make this more likely. In general, Steroids will make you slightly more agressive and more confident. They give you a sense of well being and confidence. However, they will not make you an unprovoked angry psycopath that is classic of media propoganda called “roid rage”. I have previously written an article on Roid Rage: Real or Myth?, citing research on the issue to help back my arguments.

2) It causes Suicide/Depression and Sexual problems

When you go on long steroid cycles and your body comes off it, it has completely stopped producing testosterone. You have a hormonal imbalance of low testosterone and high estrogen. This hormone change, causes depression and moodiness postcycle. Men will essentially feel like a 10 year old depressed girl scout off a long steroid cycle. Over multiple steroid cycles, you get used to coming off, but psychology it is hard to deal. When you get off steroids you will feel weaker and less confident. To make matters worse you will probably will have, erectile or libido problems temporarily.

With all these things going on, it is obvious that they could increase the likelihood of suicide or depression, in susceptible individuals. What usually happens though, is people just tough it out for a few weeks and then jump on another cycle. In other words, it becomes a roller coaster of addiction. It is psychological addiction though and not physical. But you can get psychologically addicted to lots of things such as junk food, porn, etc.

Yes, your testes will definitely shrink within a few weeks of cycle. If you were using testosterone steroid, once you get off you will lose your sex drive. In rare cases some people lose their sex drive for many months after a steroid cycle. They have to resort to HCG, in order to “jumpstart” the bodies natural testosterone production.

In the world of performance enhancing drugs, hCG is increasingly used in combination with various Anabolic Androgenic Steroid (AAS) cycles.

When AAS are put into a male body, the body’s natural negative feedback loops cause the body to shut down its own production of testosterone via shutdown of the HPTA (hypothalamic pituitary-testicular axis). High levels of AASs that mimic the body’s natural testosterone trigger the hypothalamus to shut down its production of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. Without GnRH the pituitary gland stops releasing luteinizing hormone (LH). LH normally travels from the pituitary via the blood stream to the testes where it triggers the production and release of testosterone. Without LH, the testes shut down their production of testosterone, causing testicular atrophy (”shrunken balls”).

In males, hCG mimics LH and helps restore / maintain testosterone production in the testes. As such, hCG is commonly used during and after steroid cycles to maintain and restore testicular size as well as endogenous testosterone production. However, if hCG is used for too long and in too high a dose, the resulting rise in natural testosterone will eventually inhibit its own production via negative feedback on the hypothalamus and pituitary.

3) Steroids are bad for your heart

This is true. Steroids decrease your HDL while increasing your LDL. HDL is the “good cholesterol” which acts like draino on your arteries for cleaning up plaque buildup. LDL is the “bad cholesterol” which puts cholesterol on your artery. So as you can see long term use of steroids is not a good idea. Short cycles and infrequent use would be best for your health if you choose to use them. The massive weight and water gain also puts pressure on the heart and is not a good thing to be doing frequently over your lifetime. Steroids also increase the harmful protein homocysteine according to this study

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study provides more evidence that long-term use of anabolic steroids can cause heart and blood vessel disease, and may even boost the risk of sudden death.

UK researchers found that bodybuilders who used the muscle-building steroids had increased levels of homocysteine, a protein tied to increased mortality, heart disease risk and blood vessel damage, compared with bodybuilders who didn’t use the performance-enhancing drugs.

Three steroid users died suddenly during the course of the study, and all had homocysteine levels that were higher than the average for steroid-using study participants.

“The findings of this study suggest that anabolic-androgenic steroids are detrimental to cardiovascular health and appear to be implicated in cardiovascular mortality in long-term anabolic-androgenic steroid abuse,” Dr. Michael R. Graham of the University Glamorgan in Pontypridd, Wales and colleagues conclude.

There have been reports suggesting that steroid users face an increased risk of sudden death as well as acute clotting-related health problems such as stroke and heart attack, Graham and his team note.

To determine whether steroid users might have increased homocysteine levels, which could contribute to the risk of heart and blood vessel problems, the researchers measured levels of homocysteine and several other substances in the blood in bodybuilders who had been using steroids for more than 20 years.

They were compared to steroid-using bodybuilders who had abstained from the drugs for three months, bodybuilders who had never used steroids, and sedentary, non-steroid-using men.

Current and past steroid users had higher homocysteine levels than other study participants, as well as “dramatically elevated” levels of hematocrit.

As mentioned, three of the steroid-using bodybuilders died during the study period and all of them had significantly higher levels of homocysteine than the average for the steroid-using group.

Sudden death and acute clotting events “may represent under-appreciated risks” of anabolic steroid use, the team warns.

However Folic Acid and Vitamin B break down homocysteine protein in the body so a simple diet change could help offset that.

Homocysteine levels are strongly influenced by diet, as well as by genetic factors. The dietary components with the greatest effects are folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12. Folic acid and other B vitamins help break down homocysteine in the body. Several studies have found that higher blood levels of B vitamins are related, at least partly, to lower concentrations of homocysteine. Other recent evidence shows that low blood levels of folic acid are linked with a higher risk of fatal coronary heart disease and stroke.

There have also been studies showing the permanent thickening of the ventricular wall in steroid users vs natural powerlifters. Although there are questions about that study as it has obvious flaws.

4) Steroids are bad for your liver.

This is true. There is a definite scientific link between steroids and liver damage or liver cancer. However, it is usually exaggerated. First off alchohol or many prescription drugs, are probably just as toxic, if not more, to the liver. It is hard to determine what is caused by a person using alchohol and/or other drugs compared to steroid use in their life.

Secondly, it depends on what type of steroids you use. In the bodybuilding community it is also recommended not to focus on “oral” cycles which use the more dangerous methylated compounds and are much more hard on the liver. Injectables do not use methylated steroids and are taught among reputable bodybuilders to be not only the best mass builders among bodybuilders, but also the safest on your liver.

5) Steroids cause bad acne and hair loss

This is true. Your acne will increase especially cystic acne in your back and chest and face. Acne is related to your hormones and the androgenic nature of steroids cause your cystic acne to increase. If you are really susceptible to cystic acne, you will get many large acne cysts.

Steroids will increase hair loss. The thinning and receding is mainly permanent, so it is best to help prevent it while on cycle. As with acne, the severity of your hair loss will depend on your genetics. Nizoral shampoo 2%, anti dandruff shampoo (with zinc), rogaine, Spiro, are all easy to get and proven to help combat/prevent against thinning “alopecia” for MPB (Male pattern baldness). Prescription drugs such as propecia and duasteride also help against the androgenic side effects, but will only help against testosterone, so it won’t help if your taking Tren and dianabol for example. Propecia and duasteride will also reduce the effectiveness of testosterone since it works on the body’s conversion to DHT, which is very anabolic too

Steroids cause prostate cancer

This is so complex of a topic, that it inspired me to write an indepth article on the issue seperately here. You do not want to miss reading it.
