Effect of Ejaculation (Sex) on Bodybuilding Gains

September 30th, 2007 by Paul Johnson

The question on whether ejaculation (or sex) before workouts will effect their strength or muscle gains, is a common question for many bodybuilders. Athletes have also have been debating this question for years. Some believe that ejaculation before an athletic event will help their performance, while others believe it should be done after or even abstained completely. In this article I will discuss the hormonal effects of ejaculation on the body and when (or if) it should be avoided

Effects on testosterone during sexual arousal and ejaculation:

Testosterone level have been found in research to rise in humans after sexual stimuli (such as sexually explicit pictures). One study like this was published in New Scientist 22 Aug 98 11, done by Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Urban Ethology in Vienna. 10 men and 10 women viewed a 15 minute pornographic film. Men’s testosterone levels increased 100 percent afterwards, while women’s was 80 percent.

Another study published by Psychoneuroendocrinology. 1993;18(3):205-18 used sexually arousing films on 9 males. LH levels (stimulates testosterone production) and testosterone levels increased within 10 minutes of sexually arousal. Other studies have also shown, other types of stimuli may also increase testosterone levels and agression, such as holding a gun.

Studies dealing with testosterone levels and it’s effects during sexual acts and ejaculation, seem to be mostly done on animals.  One study done on rats by the Instituto de Neuroetologia, Universidad Veracruzana, Xalapa, Ver., Mexico showed that after 2 ejaculations there was a steep rise in serum testosterone and remained higher even after 4 ejaculations in a row. Another study was done on stallions and mating by the Dipartimento di Scienze Cliniche Veterinarie, Sez. Clinica Ostetrica e Ginecologica Veterinaria. They found that testosterone levels rised 10 minutes after mating and then again 30 minutes into it. Cortisol levels also increased during the mating.

A study by Department of Pharmacobiology, Centro de Investigación y Estudios Avanzados was done on rats to measure sexual satiety and androgen receptors. The rats were measured after a sexual encounter. They measured the testosterone levels afterwards and found no change. They also measured a drop in angrodren receptor density, in the MPOA-medial part of the brain. This receptor density returned 72 hours later. It appears from this study, the lack of sexual desire post ejaculation, may have been from changes in the brain, not from changes in testosterone.

A study by the Department of Reproductive Biology, Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana-Iztapalapa found that testosterone levels stayed the same or rised, after various types of sexual encounters in male rats. The more experienced rats had a large increase in testosterone post-ejaculation, which remained even 24 hours afterwards. The sexually inexperienced rats however, had little change in testosterone post sexual encounter. This study suggests that sexual experience and execution, may play a role in the rise of testosterone.

Long term testosterone levels from abstaining ejaculation:

The only study I could find measuring testosterone levels of men who didn’t ejaculation for extended periods of time, was research done by chinese researchers, J Zhejiang Univ Sci. 2003 Mar-Apr;4(2):236-40. The study was done on 28 men who were told to not ejaculate for entire week. It was found that for first 6 days testosterone levels did not change. However, on the 7th day of abstaining, testosterone levels jumped up by nearly 50%. It then declined quickly after that day, therefore abstaining from ejaculation had no long term rising effect.

Summary:

What do these studies on animals and humans tell us about the relationship between testosterone and sexual activity? Many people have always assumed that after sexual activity, males experience a drop in testosterone levels. There is no research we could find that points to a significant drop in testosterone post-ejaculation. In fact research tells us that the opposite seems to be true. Men will have significant jumps in testosterone levels from sexually arousing stimuli(and certain other types of stimuli). The research also suggests that sexual encounters and ejaculation, will not effect and may increase, testosterone blood levels.

Viewing sexually arousing material, without ejaculating, before working out should be beneficial for improving workouts.  Ejaculating before working out, would probably not be ideal, since ejaculation also releases endorphins(pain killing) natural hormones in the body. This would in turn effect your strength and energy before your workout.

The chinese study also suggests that abstaining from ejaculation will not increase your Testosterone levels long term and hence, not improve your bodybuilding gains.  Recent studies are also showing a significant drop in prostate cancer risk, for men who more frequently ejaculate. According to current research, ejaculation (or sex) is not going to lower your testosterone levels, in either the short term or long term.

great post.. but one question remains….how often is often?? is ejaculating once a day normal or abnormal? it would have helped a lot if the article mentioned numbers instead of abstractions

    True story Chuck…

There’s been a long going folklore in jail about ejaculating effectively lowering your ability to build muscle. It always seemed reasonable to me in theory, but I guess it’s all bullshit.

Ali, I can’t answer everything. I try to write most of my articles based on fact or logical thinking, but those kinds of detailed questions I couldn’t answer.

  7. Manuel Hernández on May 20th, 2008

This had been a poignant question for me. Thank you.
After reading your text, it makes sense frome an evolution point of view. An Alfa male should be able to maintain strenght AND ejaculate several times in a row to reproduce as much as possible.
Therefore, maintaining a high level of testosterone to produce muscle, and libido, is likely to happen after ejaculation, and even after several occasions. This would be certainly useful in the natural selection of mammals. Thank you again, and my best regards.

  8. armin on June 5th, 2008

Hmm, dunno about that. It is said that it takes 48 hours for your sperm to rebuild itself after ejaculation and it is mostly made out of proteins. So, when you think about it, you lose valuable proteins for two days after ejaculating (about 20 to 30 grams or 10-15g a day).

  9. admin on June 5th, 2008

Well, your body constantly makes semen anyways and if its not used, it just absorbs it back in the body.

Its not like its going to take the protein from the rest of our body anyways. That would be like saying if we work our arms, it take away our efforts from building our chest.

  13. admin on June 27th, 2008

There might be some kind of boost from celibacy, but its not due to testosterone. Maybe psychological reasons or for some other reason.

  14. dan on July 30th, 2008

Abstinence does increase testosterone according to this, but orgasm does not change blood level in the short term.

  15. patrick on August 3rd, 2008

Thanks for gathering the research and writing the article. It doesn’t sound like a very big loss of protein. When you are working out and eating right you are adding lots of protien, so it doesn’t sound like a problem in that department. I always wondered if the change in hormone levels (testosterone?) was anti-muscle building. In conclusion…I’m not changing my social agenda with myself…

  16. Rob on September 9th, 2008

Cool article, sounds like a lot of hard work.

So I want to make this clear: ejaculation AFTER work outs (body building) is BENEFICIAL? What is? What is not?

    Best regards. Thanks.

  17. Chris on September 16th, 2008

I have to agree with some of the guys above about an increase in performance deriving directly as a result of sustained abstinence. I don’t have the time, resources or inclination to perform a conclusive experiment but certainly speaking for myself, I feel my testosterone levels definitely increase during periods of sustained abstinence.

I believe that (possibly) if you abstain, that your body naturally produces more testosterone to “pump you up” as a means of helping you further your gene and is a reaction dating back to the caves.

But again I have found no concrete proof of this -just my own anabolic and hormonal changes.

What happens after a few weeks of abstinence? Two studies shed light on how a body changes after a sxual dry spell.

Before a big day: A study of 46 men and wmen in Scotland looked at whether sx affects the body’s blood-pressure response to a stressful event — in this case, a nerve-racking combo of public speaking and verbal arithmetic. The results, published in 2006 in the journal Biological Psychology, showed that people who’d had no sxual activity (no intercourse of any kind, no masturbation) in the two weeks before the stressful day had the worst blood-pressure responses. Those with the best reactions? Folks who’d had penile-vaginal intercourse only. (Those who’d had other types of sxual activity with another person still fared worse than those who’d had vaginal intercourse; masturbation was barely an improvement over no xual activity.)

Before a big night: A study of 10 German men, published in the World Journal of Urology in 2001, looked at how three weeks of no sxual activity can affect orgasmic responses — in this case, during an evening of ertic movies and masturbation in the lab. Compared with a similar session before their abstinence, the men were more sxually aroused by the film, and their orgasms were longer and more intense. (They reported that the finale did not arrive any more quickly than usual.) What’s more, after the three-week period the men’s testosterone levels were elevated, which is known to boost libido — an effect that persisted throughout the film and even after orgasm.

  35. Zar on October 24th, 2009

The #1 problem with all of these studies about masturbating affecting athletic/gym performance is that they start and end with testosterone. Last I checked testosterone is not the only hormone in the body. But more importantly is that while testosterone is not effected by masturbation, many other hormones actually are like oxytocin, dopamine, angrogen hormones, cortisol, and a host of others. But the most important being dopamine which controls motivation and reward response, and the angrogen hormones which control adrenaline. Continual overexposure to both of these hormones leads to a lower response. Granted “overexposure” is primarily in reference to overmasturbation or excessive amounts of intercourse. But the same principle can be applied to a normal frequency, in which periods of abstinence can establish a boosted response.

3 types or orgasms, ejaculatory, prostate, and non-ejacultory tantric
i seasonally work on oil rigs 90 days strait isolated in the far bush of northern canada so had some down time to tinker.
I orgasm about 3-5 times a day, about once a week i muck one up and ejaculte, it usually takes me 2 days to feel the same in terms of energy, and it shows on and of the job.
Ejaculation is definitly bad for males.
All other male orgasms die after they release seed.
The preying mantis actually evolved a secondary brain in its genitals to keep thrusting as the female mantis begins to eat its head after ejaculation.

100% sure that clean orgasms bumps up the energy level like mario eats mushrooms to get to be a big boy.

not 100% sure it bumps muscle mass, i think there’s to many other factors involved, i’m really curious about this, i’ve taken some blood tests and found that I was without any supplaments at the upper level of normal, 24ppm testosterone or sometin.
    is there a connection?

i have found that regular intercourse WITHOUT ejaculation serves me best. I have intercourse with my wife two or three times a day, but always refrain from full orgasm, except for once a week, when my testosterone levels are highest.
I have seen a couple studies showing that abstaining from ejaculation for more than 7 days causes a severe drop in test. levels.
I find that intercourse without ejaculation is very invigorating, and makes that “seventh day” all the more special: I recover almost instantly and maintain good levels of energy and sustained strength gains.

I really wish I knew the answer as to whether or not it negatively impacted one’s muscle growth after a workout. It seems to deplete significant energy/resources. Or perhaps thats just how you feel as a result of the endorphin and neurotransmitter release from orgasm. I read a book by Dr. Runels on orgasming WITHOUT ejaculation. It is a very well known subject in the orient and you can find tons of info on the subject. It apparently is very very beneficial to not ejaculate often, but rather absorb the sperm back into your body. I had a friend who was dating a chick who pushed on his perineum right as he came and he said it hurt quite a bit BUT………he said he was able to have sex all night long as a result and he felt great afterward. I also JUST read an article in Muscle and Fitness (one of those little tidbits in the first 20 pages or so) that says women benefit from being ejaculated into (no condom). of course this should only be done responsibly and with birth control and with someone you have been dating a long time blah blah blah…….but blood tests were taken after ejaculation and increases in neuro transmitters that caused mood boosting results were noted. This month’s M&F – dont take my word for it. I find that fascinating. That certainly backs up the claim that re-absorbing it or not ejaculating is beneficial. I’m scared to press on that spot and prevent semen from following its well-traveled path lol. cant bring myself to do it. apparently, people can learn to use a certain muscle to prevent it from happening but still having an orgasm.
btw, yoked is likely full of energy and ripped etc.

now if we could only find out how slammin the ham affects muscle growth and recovery post workout!

  42. bestadvice on December 3rd, 2009

Masturbation drains energy of which semen is the (gross) substantial form. Intercourse with a loving female circulates the energy (Qi) without loss. The best way to increase qi is to be aroused in intercourse but not climax. The more intercourses you can have without wasting your essence, the stronger you get. Warning: Physical celibacy has so many benefits, but practising this without mental celibacy/mental maturity is neurosis and may result in mental disease. Once you are meditative (attentive, basically live in the presemce), celibacy will open all kinds of doors for you. Believe me, through personal experience, I know and it is hard to describe. But the trick is it cannot be forced. Go with the natural rhythms, ejaculate when full mindfully and decrease the frequency until you have no need for it. For many people this may sound like a boring existence, but to put it simply, your mind becomes very luminous amd you will see mystical essence is everyone, every creature you see. You will come to respect everyone more and actually you will have great self respect that you will respect everything.

    Great article.

I have to agree with some of the responses, in that I have experienced increased motivation, quicker recovery, and feel i have more power and endurance after (during) long periods of abstinence. The longest I have gone is 2 months and the reduction of all the above mentioned points is definitely perceivable after this period of time.

I look forward to further research on this topic.

And for those who want to abstain to try to improve their workouts, I found the first 10 or so days the hardest ( no pun intended ) but after that you can focus fairly well.

  58. Brett on May 6th, 2010

Edit: I meant that I have perceived a reduction in motivation, power etc. after ejaculation post 2 months of abstinence. However, If I limit it to one sexual encounter the reduction is minimal. However if you have a total blowout and bang your partner silly all day, (or spank yourself raw,) the perceived reduction is greater. For me at least anyway.

First of all, is what is really important testosterone or muscle gains?

If testosterone then well, it seems inconclusive.

Even so. i have not masturbated for 5 nights and I can tell you positively i have more energy.

And simply having more energy (mental and physical i should add) will OBVIOUSLY help gain muscle mass, as you will be more on game, focused and not robbed of energy to go out and exersize.

    Simple

I know of some “sadhus” (ascetics) in India who advocate celibacy. A TN prog. brought them head to head with a sexologist. The doctor said, even if you practise celibacy, you will discharge eventually. Its not possible physically to hold back.
Other ascetics who ask people to practice it are idiots or thugs, who have been exposed as criminals. So, that axiom in Jail seems to hold true!
Also, it would be interesting to see how much more incidence of Prostate cancer is there in the celibates.
For real common sense purposes, heres a query. WHY would a guy build his body…? in most cases to better himself and to get a mate (chicks/ guys, whatever). So what does he do during mating? ejaculation is sine qua non. N’est Pas?

I’ve realised that ejaculation even brings pooverty just with the food u have to eat in return and the bad luck that will follow u alone.

I read in another site that an urban legend started to avoid having athletes staying out late trying to get lucky. This might also make sense for athletes staying up late watching e rotic movies, etc.

This makes sense in that there is probably research suggesting that certain times of night will produce the most restful sleep and this time conflicts with normal times of s ex, ie right before going to sleep. As a married man, if I know I will not have s ex, I can fall asleep quickly whereas if it is up in the air, I will usually end up going to bed later, not getting a good night’s sleep when the sun and kids wake me up.

The other part is the psychological part which has to do with thinking about strategy and visualizing the win and actions before falling completely asleep. If this is done, your sleep time may actually improve your mental state, thus preparing you for successful competition. I was taught that in order to learn something, you must study it and when you get it right, sleep on it, possibly letting the brain rewire itself with fresh information.

The effects of celibacy on gym-performance and adrenaline is neither biological, neurological, nor psychological. It is all three. As a martial-artist and a dabbler in the functions of the mind-body relationships, I’m very intimate with this concept.

As shown by the experiments so-kindly referenced by Mr. “Mofo,” we can all see as clear as day that abstinence contributes to stress-levels. Naturally, any sort of matter — be it living or unliving — will seek to alleviate stress in any way possible. Typically, ejaculation will relieve this stress the best; very much like dumping the contents of a bucket or perhaps as a far better example, going to the latrine for a leak after holding it for a uncomfortably long time.

Let us use my last example as the case-scenario to best illustrate my point. A gentleman needs to use the bathroom, rather badly. Is he going to walk, or is he going to run? The biological need to regularly ejaculate generates such a similar stress during times of celibacy, the body is denied this and so a process called “displacement” begins. Driven by the desire burning inside of you body, you will be under greater stress and therefore even produce higher levels of testosterone — exactly as if you were holding a gun and yearning for nothing more than to fire it at something. The barrel /must/ be emptied, and if you can’t pull the trigger you’re very likely to maul something with it instead.

If you want to prepare yourself for high-yield and incredible intense work-outs, celibacy to the point of torturous is perfect. I’m sure a clever girl somewhere would point at this information and say it’s the reason she doesn’t put out often, but such crock is only useful in making for a particularly good day at the gym. I fear I begin to digress, and I hope this knowledge is useful.

This article was very helpful, but has anyone ever heard about when ejaculating vital nutrients are released that would help in athletics, strength gains, and size gains?

I combined used the Dr Max Powers Testosterone Booster I bought a while back and absolutely love it. It is much more effective than the silly power drinks that some of the guys drink in the gym. Use this if you are working out or an athlete that wants to recover faster from tough work outs, spice up your sexual life, or just help restore your testosterone levels to what they used to be when you were younger.
