Title: MMA training hurt muscle gains?
Post by: paulpfiction on October 03, 2007, 02:31:40 PM
I do a MMA workout about 2 times a week for an hour.  Could this effect my muscle growth?

MMA training is great you must eat more calories if you would like to gain weight.

I'm interested in doing some martial arts myself.  I'm planning to cut back on weight training just a little.

I'm really not convinced that MMA can hurt your muscle gains, especially if its 1-2 times a week. Sure you might lose a lot of weight, but not necessarily muscle...It really all depends on your body, everyone is different.  But I can say from personal experience that is you put your mind to it you can train twice a week and still workout and have muscle gains.  Although it might take a while for your body to adjust...

I agree, MMA workout is more of a stamina building. It will definitely hurt you muscle gaining.

A big part of muscle gain has to do with the diet, when and what you eat is just as important as the muscle training program you participate in.

If you are doing few hours per week wont do much. It all depends on your body condition.
I practice MMA 2-3 hours per week. I dont think it is stopping me by gaining muscles.

I am training for an upcoming fight and been training MMA on and off since 1995 , but as I prep to fight in April I have had great gains still with weightlifting .  Like already stated its about taking in more calories and getting enough rest.

I believe that the body will only be overtrained if you dont feed it enough and well also if you do not train smart. If you are doing alot of circuit work for MMA well then that added cardio could make gaining size a bit harder , but then again it depends on your goals.

I say eat right and alot to get the calories needed. Train smart and listen to your body, if you feel worn out take a break and hit it again later. Chances are your mind will fatigue before your body resulting in the brain telling the body you have had enough before you really have.  Short naps can help get the body recovered and occupying your time with something other than weightlifting or MMA can give your brain a rest .

If you lift super heavy and train mma then your CNS- Central Nervous System is taking a beating and this will cause your whole entire operation to shut down, thus leaving you with no results.  So when you feel you are going through the movements because you feel you have to , well back off take a break and nail it again later.
